Horseracing
is held mostly on Saturdays as from month of May
to November.
Most
of the stables sign jockeys from South Africa,
France, or England, although there are a few Mauritian
jockeys. As Mauritius does not have a breeding
programme, most horses are imported from South
Africa, France or England.
On
a horseracing day punters surround the bookies.
Race day is also big business for the food sellers
where the spectators can buy a large variety of
food. Specialised horseracing magazines are printed
for each meeting.
The
real excitement start just after noon with the
first race. The crowd stand into the stands to
overlook the paddock ring where the horses parade
before each race and from where they can assess
each horse's chance of victory. Race goers begin
to depart from the ground around 5pm just after
the last and eighth race.

sums up a day's racing at the Champ de Mars.
